Deadly shoot-out erupts in Lebanon's Baalbeck

At least three people were killed in clashes in the Lebanese town of Baalbeck on Saturday after gunmen opened fire on a checkpoint manned by Hezbollah, security sources said.

One Hezbollah member was killed and two others were wounded when gunmen opened fire from a car at the checkpoint, the sources said. Hezbollah gunmen returned fire, killing two men and wounding three, they said.

According to the Lebanese National News Agency, at least three were killed in the ongoing clash, including a vegetable vendor who happened to be at the scene in the souk and two gunmen.

The NNA reported that at least five people were injured and sent to the hospital.

The Lebanese army was trying to break up the fighting, an NNA correspondent said.

This would be the second altercation this week between Hezbollah and members of a family opposed to the resistance group.

The 30-month conflict in neighboring Syria has fueled tensions across Lebanon between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The tensions have erupted at times into street fighting, deadly car bombings and rocket fire.

Several rockets have been fired at in the Bekaa Valley by suspected Syrian rebels or their supporters..
