Updated: 4:14pm: Syrian warplanes launched at least two airstrikes on a Palestinian refugee camp near Damascus killing a number of people Sunday, an opposition group said.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said eight people were killed in an unprecedented airstrike on the Yarmouk refugee camp which has been the scene of intense fighting over the past several weeks between rebels and a pro-government Palestinian group.
Reuters, citing “opposition activists” put the death toll at 25.
Al-Akhbar cannot independently verify the number of those killed.
Casualty figures from the Syrian conflict are often inconsistent, especially in the immediate aftermath of a tragedy.
On Saturday Ahmed Jibril, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command which backs the government, fled the camp with his son after weeks of battling rebels.
