I found OS reports of them being Alawite, as well, but it was a truly mixed bag. Nothing seems to agree.

Wow, that is crazy. Overwhelmingly OS is reporting that they are Sunni. Some reports even talk about the exact tribal affiliation of Shawkat as coming from the Sunni tribe of Bani Khaled.

I concur with Reva, I have read multiple reports in multiple languages that indicate these guys are Sunni.
