To mark this year's celebrations for Kuwait's national and independence day, the Remal International Sand and Light Sculpture Festival, part of the Proud to be Kuwaiti (P2BK) Exhibition, opened its gates at the International Fair Grounds in the Mishrif area.

Seventy-three master sand sculptors from around world descended on the tiny desert nation, working for months to painstakingly dig and craft an array of the world's largest sand sculptures, all inspired by 1,001 Nights and other classic Arabic tales.

From fire bursting forth atop castles, to elaborate performances by dancers dressed as mythical beasts, the results were surreal. Once the sun set, colored lights illuminated the sculptures, casting wild shadows and setting new scenes.
