Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened Tuesday to teach Gaza's ruling Hamas movement a lesson "very soon" following a surge in rocket attacks against the occupying force.
"We have a very clear policy. We prevent terror attacks when we identify them in the making, and we respond forcefully against whoever hurts us," right-wing Netanyahu told reporters at a press conference with visiting Canadian counterpart Stephen Harper.
"This policy produced a quiet year in 2013, which was the quietest in many years. If Hamas and the terror organizations have forgotten this lesson, they will learn it again powerfully very soon."
His threat was issued shortly after Hamas said it had deployed forces in Gaza to "preserve the truce" following an uptick of rocket fire on Israeli targets.
Over the past month, tensions have risen in and around Gaza after more than a year of relative calm following a major Israeli assault on the besieged strip that killed at least 177 Palestinians in November 2012.
By comparison, Israel has killed nine Palestinians in Gaza over 2013 according to Israeli NGO B'Tselem. Most of those killings were the result of occupation forces opening fire on farmers or other Palestinians near the so-called buffer zone along the Gaza border.
Since December 20, four Palestinians including a three-year-old girl were killed in Gaza by Israeli forces.
Israel says eight rockets fired from Gaza have struck occupied Palestine since January 1, and another five were intercepted by Israel's anti-missile system. But Israel is known to exaggerate the efficacy of its so-called Iron Dome.
Hamas denies firing the rockets, which are sometimes claimed by jihadist groups.

Well that's what anyone can expect from a war criminal; death threats. This is apartheid and everyone who's not blinded by Israeli propaganda will rise and support the Palestinians. Long live Palestine, long live Gaza! Just because rockets were fired from Gaza (that didn't kill anyone), he's going to use that as an excuse to murder Palestinian civilians, what a warmongering terrorist. Palestinians are oppressed everyday and so I say they have a right to use rockets. I mean, if someone illegally occupied my home and oppressed me, tortured me, made me go through checkpoints in my own homeland etc, I would retaliate against them too. I guess we all know who the real terrorists are, don't we Israhell?
Only the Palestinians can rise against the Zionist oppressors and claim their freedom and land back.
Only a rise from within can make a difference. Other counties can lend a helping hand in terms of tactical and monetary support but, in the end, freedom can only be achieved by the Palestinians and no one else.
