At least 90 Iraqi teenagers with "emo" appearances have been stoned to death by religious extremists in Baghdad in the past month after an inflammatory interior ministry statement dubbed it "devil worshiping", activists said.

Iraq's Moral Police released a chilling statement on the interior ministry's website condemning the "emo phenomenon" among Iraqi youth, disturbingly declaring its intent to "eliminate" the trend.

"The 'Emo phenomenon' or devil worshiping is being followed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate [the phenomenon] as soon as possible since it's detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger," the statement read.

"They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationary that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities," it continued.

Religious extremists caught onto the interior ministry statement, and have been harassing and killing teenagers with "strange" or "emo" appearances.

A group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing led dozens of teenagers to secluded areas a few days ago, stoned them to death, and then disposed their bodies in garbage dumpsters across the capital, according to activists.

The armed men are said to belong to “one of the most extremist religious groups” in Iraq.

“First they throw concrete blocks at the boy's arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead then, they start all over again,” one person who managed to escape told Al-Akhbar.

Iraq's moral police was granted approval by the Ministry of Education to enter Baghdad schools and pinpoint students with such appearances, according to the interior ministry's statement.

The exact death toll remains unclear, but Hana al-Bayaty of Brussels Tribunal, an NGO dealing with Iraqi issues, said the current figure ranges "between 90 and 100."

"What's most disturbing about this is that they're so young," she said.

Al-Bayaty said the killings appear to have been carried out by extremist Shia militias in mostly poor Shia neighborhoods and said she suspected "there's complicity of the Ministry of Interior in the killings."

Photos of the victims were released on Facebook, causing panic and fear among Iraqi students.

A young man with long hair expressed alarm at the government-ordained harassment of teenagers with Western appearances.

“I have long hair but that doesn't mean I'm an Emo. I'm not less of a man if I have long hair. Let's not say that if I have long hair, I'm a homosexual, but I have long hair because this is my style, this is me," he told Iraq's Al-Sharqiya television network.

Below is the full Al-Sharqiya report in Arabic:

Safiyyah al-Suhail, an MP, said on Thursday that "some students have been recently arrested because they were wearing American jeans or had Western haircuts."

The interior ministry has not disclosed the number of teenage victims, but released a follow-up statement on Thursday warning extremists "not to step on public freedom of Iraqis."

News of the gruesome deaths drew a stern reaction from Iraq's prominent Shia cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who criticized the stoning of the young men as "an act of terrorism."

Below is the full English translation of the Iraqi interior ministry's inflammatory statement (original Arabic here):

The Director of the Moral Police of the Interior Ministry released a statement, saying "The 'Emo phenomenon' or devil worshiping is being followed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate [the phenomenon] as soon as possible since it's detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger."

'Emo' comes from the English word 'emotional' and the phenomenon is popular among teenagers not only in Iraq, but in most societies. They use their appearances and movements as a method to express their emotions and embody their will and their view of life in their behavior.

Colonel Mushtaq Taleb al-Mahemdawi said: "The Emo Phenomenon was discovered a while back by members of our force in Baghdad. A report has been made and given to the Ministry of Interior to receive an approval to carry on with the investigation and to know how to eliminate the phenomenon."

He added: "The Ministry of Interior took this situation very seriously and received an approval from the Ministry of Education to set a plan under my full supervision and to allow us to enter schools in the capital."

"There are some cases of the spread of this phenomenon specifically among schools in Baghdad, but we are facing great difficulty in the lack of women on the force who would allow us to carry the investigation more accurately since the phenomenon is more popular among girls between the ages of 14 and 18."

"They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationary that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities."

This is very bad for them. It should be strictly controlled by the government otherwise it will be more painful in the future.

i do say devil worship & homosexuality are wrong but having an emo hairstyle doesnt make you a devil worshipper..they were murdered...another act of injuistice....even though they had no proof... plus whats wrong with a hair style

For the record Islam and Satanism are nothing alike, whoever wrote that is an ignorant fool who needs to know what they're talking about. Islam is about being absolutely devote to God. Satanism denies the existence of a God at all. And apart from that the very basic concepts are different, example because they are trying to be devote they must to all that is required of them to be worthy in the eyes of their God, whereas in Satanism you live life for yourself and there is no need to be devote to a God. And besides, this article really shouldn't be about religion, its about discrimination. The way a kid dresses, or styles their hair is a personal choice and it is not going to destroy their society. The fact that these people are being killed for who they are is disgusting.

Interesting article--and it ties in to another article which might be of interest to you all--on the new Saudi crackdown on "sorcery & witchcraft." I

Religion is murder.
Claiming that the actions of killing are motivated by God is a lie.
The "Books of Faith" were written by MEN. Bigotted, prejudiced, power hungry MEN.
Any God would be shamed to see the maiming and murder done in their name.
To grant Islam, Christianity, Judaism or any other "Religious Faith" any legitimacy is to create a lie founded on a lie in support of man-made oppression and cruelty.
Faith is personal and should be only between a person and their heart. Adding the mechinations of religious dogma and dictate doesn't improve or enhance faith, it only kills and harms to serve greed, oppression and evil.

All reglion does not promote this sort of evil. For you to suggest so is ignorant and lazy, seek the truth and discover that God wants to unite us all with love. We cannot unite without coming together, and stupid people like you suggest that any 'coming together in the name of God' - which would qualify as a relgion - is evil.

I'm in NO WAY condoning the actions alleged in this story, however, if true, I'm convinced that the bigotry, anger and rage that fueled the perpetrators passion to kill is resident within each of us.
Perhaps you don't think so, but what if someone raped your three year-old child and you had a chance to retaliate? What if someone violated you in unspeakable ways and you had a chance to even the score?
Maybe you'd justify your actions as appropriate based on the circumstances, and that may be legally accurate. BUT what about the anger and hostility and rage? Where did it come from? It didn't come from the event; the event brought out what was already within you.
Clearly we all have the capacity for impure thoughts, selfish motives and hurtful actions within us and while some people believe religion can help them purge this evil from within themselves, the universal effects remain in every culture.
WE ALL need help..WE ALL need to be rescued..and NO RELIGEOUS CRUSADE WILL SOLVE OUR PROBLEM!!
JESUS CHRIST is the ONLY ONE who can save us!
PUT HIM TO THE TEST...Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life. No man comes to God but through me." He is the ONLY ONE who conquered death by rising from the grave! He is the ONLY ONE who loved those who persecuted him to the point of death on a Roman cross. He is the ONLY ONE who claimed to have the ability to absolve the consequence of our sins (breaking of God's commands).
Read what HE SAID... Look at what HE DID...WATCH WHAT HE WILL DO....FOR YOU!
I pray for the families of those young people who were senselessly murdered and I hope they knew Jesus Christ as their Savior but I also pray for their killers, that they would know forgiveness and peace with God through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ. And I pray for my friends of every persuasion because we are all created in the image of the invisible God.

I suppose this is an 'overflow' of the sentiments held by the Iraqi people about the West and its influences Jesus Freak.

More than a half million children died because of the american sanction according to the red cross after youre bombed the most advanced, educated and progressive arab society in to the stone age. Remember how furius the americans were right after 9/11. Guess what Arabs have feelings too. Just imagine an outside force put sanction on the US. 5 million children die out of hunger. Others are born and looked literrally like fishheads and died after minutes .The product of the contaminated amunition used by the US contaminated the DNA of the mothers. Not to mention the environment.

Before the sanction put in place the US would be bombed to the stone age. And than after a decade you would be attacked again without any involvment in 9/11. The same country that attacked you twice and sanctioned you will get the greates oil contracts. And then on top of that you see people around you trying to imitate the lifestyle and culture of the very same country that brought this Horror over you. You project all the hate you feel towards this country on this innocent person and here we go.

religion is only for the uneducated people! let's fight religion, the evil of mankind!

Whoever calls the name of God in matters of religion has not understood any thing.

Praying and stuff is only for those who don't take care and absolutely full responsibility for themselves and their entire existence.

"God" isn't anywhere "outside" to be praised but is the total spirit without polarity.

It's insane to proclaim a fixed knowledge, understanding and framwork of "God".

Whoever claims to explain God seems overwhelmingly unconscious, leading to fanatism, terrorism, a drawback of human mental and spiritual evolution.

Both are signs of undereducation in terms of intelligence.

Great christian based civilization in europe 70 years ago -> Nazis. So much for civilized. Not sure how thick the layer of culture is that prevents us from beeing such a society, alot of the posters here seem so afraid of. Reading some of the stuff you people write makes it seem very thin. Calling for carpetbombs? really? I just have to ask: UMAD?

Your statement is actually quite false. If you are going to attempt to claim that the Nazi's were a Christian based civilization, I do suggest that you know basic history. Hitler's "crusade" was based off of the Darwinian theory of evolution. He believed that the Arian (German) "race" was the most highly evolved species on the planet and that the Jews were the lowest. Hitler used the guise of Christianity in order to get the religious community on his side. Hitler was completely anti-God. Not a single thing he did was "Christian." So to try to say that Hitler's Nazi Germany was Christian is to make a statement out of ignorance and try to play it off as a fact.

Quite right, Fehlersturm, except for one thing: Naziism, as I recall, had to be carpetbombed out of existence (as in Hamburg, Dresden, and Berlin). So it's not necessarily off the wall to call for it in response to atrocities like these. There may be no other solution to this kind of barbarism.

The Koran teaches in Sura 5 Al-Mã’edah :28 "If you extend your hand to kill me, I am not extending my hand to kill you. For I reverence GOD, Lord of the universe... 9 32 ) ...anyone who murders any person who had not committed murder or horrendous crimes, it shall be as if he murdered all the people. And anyone who spares a life it shall be as if he spared the lives of all the people. .... And as the poet Saadi says M. Aryanpoor as:
Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you've no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain!
by H. Vahid Dastjerdi as:[9]
Adam's sons are body limbs, to say;
For they're created of the same clay.
Should one organ be troubled by pain,
Others would suffer severe strain.
Thou, careless of people's suffering,
Deserve not the name, "human being".
and the last translation by Dr. Iraj Bashiri:[10]
Of One Essence is the Human Race,
Thusly has Creation put the Base.
One Limb impacted is sufficient,
For all Others to feel the Mace.
The Unconcern'd with Others' Plight,
Are but Brutes with Human Face.
The translations above are attempts to preserve the rhyme scheme of the original while translating into English, but may distort the meaning. What follows is an attempt at a more literal translation of the original Persian:
"Human beings (children of Adam) are the parts of a body,
They are from the same species,
When one of these parties is reached and suffering,
Others can not find neither peace nor tranquility,
If the misery of others leaves you indifferent,
And without any trouble! Then:
It is unthinkable to call yourself a human being
Bani Adam, calls for breaking all barriers:[7]

"Thou, careless of people's suffering,
Deserve not the name, "human being"."
----EXACTLY----Now apply that concept to Islamist suicide bombers

this is the end of the world. innocent boys (childs infact) are tricked and then killed by the satan followers. remember imam Ali had lots of pains with these groups named khavarej. they are people who know themselves more catolick than pop.

I'm glad we shoved freedom down their throats, it turned out wonderfully for everyone.

The fact WE shoved freedom down their throats didn't force them to stone their children! Have YOU read the quran? It's obious you haven't because if you DID, you'd know that their religion of peace is anything BUT peaceful not to mention Sharia law and their traditions are brutal towards women and treat them like property. But I wonder if you would stick up for women and these children???? Probably NOT!

Why should this be a surprise to anyone? Islam is just another form of Satanism

Whether Muslims follow a false god or not, never the less the ring leader of this awful act are extremists and so please don't judge a religion held important by millions as being the same.

Wish this 'behavior modification' technique of stoning would come to the US so we can deal with our domestic 'emos'. You can only tell someone they look like a total dork and are no more than loser "goths" before you get sick of their denial and want to stone them. Maybe that would get them to head over to Kohl's or Macy's and dress properly and do away with the "Oh, I'm so depressed" attitudes emos and goths have to drag about and annoy others with.

So you're tired of talking and want to stone kids? What a piece of %$&$# you are.

Isn't Islam the religion of peace? Exactly when? There have been over 19,000 acts of terrorism worldwide since 9/11. And how long was the Iran/Iraq War, about 8 years? They love violence, not peace, and they don't care about killing their own.

Because Christianity is the model of a religion putting their peaceful teachings into practise. The Crusades (Which happened to the best of my knowledge between 1096-1204, so that took up a few years). Naizis (and then nations that identify themselves as Christian increase conflict in Israel). World War One (Everyone claimed God to be on their side). The on-off violence in Ireland. There are many example of Christianity being used to excuse violence. Sadly there are many example of other religions using their religions (and all six of the major religions teach peace) for an excuse of violence. That fact that they use their religion as an excuse for their actions doesn't mean we should use their actions as an excuse to insult the religion of millions of innocent people. Lets not judge the general religion. Exreemists are not a fair representation.

I don't know if you have seen this, but it must be stopped ...

If God intended for all to be uniform in appearance wouldn't all of you look exactly alike? Do you think God made a mistake?

Make petroleum worthless and you solve your problem. Then they will crawl back under their rock.

What do you expect from cultures that have been around for thousands of years and barely evolved? They still have the mentality of a fourth century Bedouin. Lack of education makes them no better than savages isolated in a jungle cut off from the rest of the human race. It’s just like survival of the fittest, they will not last, their beliefs and customs are incompatible with the rest of the world and their ignorance and stubborn adherence to the ancient past will be there undoing. History has shown us that any culture that does not morph with history dies out and any culture that uses suicide bombers and must rely on the uneducated state of its population for rule and control is following a path that is unsustainable.
As my Middle Eastern friends have shown me, the only people left Iraq are those who were too poor and uneducated to leave it after the first gulf war. The country is now filled with uneducated, poor people who are easy to rule by fear. Just let nature take its course, the world is now watching with horror, how these countries, people, religions conduct themselves and they export that hate to all corners of the world making more and more enemy’s, it is unsustainable and will end poorly for them; sorry no paradise for the ignorant religious masses, only more death, less stability.

This is a pretty bold statement here. I sure hope it was authored by a person who doesn't have much money and dropped out of school or else your points are baseless. I'm sure many highly educated, evolved and civilized people remained. I imagine your an American too. Last time I checked your country is the world leader in murdering innocent people for the last 150 years running. I don't see you calling yourself a member of barbaric, child race that is hell bent on slamming imperialism down people throats? Yeah 90 kids died for what they wore it's terrible but how many people die for absolutely no reason at the hands of your government? Just because the people in power are corrupt, fundentalists doesn't mean the whole country is. Their lives are worth just as much as yours.

America is also the most desired place that people around the world want to relocate to. So don't judge us all by the actions of our Zionist enslaved government. Stay in your own country and hate all you want.

I dont know where u from. But u r 110% correct!!!!!!

The same kinds of things have happened in educated societies; take Nazi Germany, for instance. The Nazi's tied to ban American influences in Germany. They rounded up thousands of young people who admired the music and style of Americans and forced them into work camps and into the army. Young people in oppressive societies look for any outlet to rebel since they instinctively know that the oppression is wrong, and conclude that anything their oppressors are opposed to must be a path to freedom.

However much I agree with your thinking, please allow me to point out a few contradictions of your post...
"cultures that have been around for thousands of years". ---> "they will not last".
"let nature take it's course". ---> " it is unsustainable and will end poorly".

Not sure where you are coming from to speculate on the demise of cultures that have "sustained" for over 2000 years. I'm here in America, we have 235 years give or take under our belt. We are flat broke and scheduled for a historically massive demise. It is our "ignorance and stubborn adherence" to the progressive future that will revert our compatibility with the rest of the world to war for rescourses and repayment of debt. How is that for morphing with history?

Go figure, more Muslims murdering each other. I always thought a moral code of ethics was written in everyone's hearts but the more you hear about stuff like this the more you wonder how there culture is so permiated with hate and violence. I don't think there's any help saving the Muslim world, they are devolving not evolving. If anything we should stay out of the middle easy altogether and let them kill each other off. I just hope Europe and the US get smart about letting these people migrate to our countries. We're too politically correct for our own good. We need to go back to the days were we deported commies but limit it to Muslims.

Islam is not dying out. It is estimated that Muslims number 1.2 Billion and rapidly growing. The percentage of radical Islamist are believe to be 20%. Christian populations are declining. One needs only to look at Europe to see the impact that Islam is having. The mosques advocate the women have 10 children, many funded by social programs for the medical and living expenses. Areas within some European nations are ruled by Shiria law. Demonstrations have closed down streets, burned hundreds of autos, and Muslims are expected to be the majority in several European nations within 20 years. The US is not far behind. Some cities in the US have large Muslim populations that are demanding the establishment of Shiria courts. Even Wall Street has sent up financial instruments that conform to Islamic laws.

One can look at the resilience of the Kurds in their war against the Soviet Union, the Viet Kong is outlasting the US, and now the Taliban in Afghanistan growing stronger in Pakistan as they await for the US departure, to wonder which is the stronger. Radical Islamist are willing to die for their cause, are Western nations willing to sacrifice their citizens? Our enemies don't play by rules, but we tie the hands of our soldiers saying they cannot fire unless being fired upon. The US press and politicians are quick to label soldiers as baby killers, terrorists, murderers of innocents, etc. During WWII we destroyed cities, targeted factories with "innocent civilians", sank unarmed supply ships to win the war to end all wars. Today our forces are court-martialed for collateral damage. They are accused of torture for using "enhanced interrogation" techniques even if it can save numerous lives. If you believe modern nations are the stronger, then they need to have more resolve than their enemies.

The US went into Iraq without a plan on what to do after removing Saddam. Those that were for nation building won out when the US was blamed for destroying "order" in Iraq. We contemplated dividing Iraq in thirds for the two Islamic factions and the Kurds but opted for an Arab democracy that voted in a power that kept Muslim ways and was intolerant to Christianity and other religions. (Remember Bush ordering the burning of Bibles that were written in Arabic and Farsi? We supported intolerance.) The US allowed the Iraqi government to rule Iraq as they determined it to be run. Obama kept with the same policies that Bush began. If the US was to try to change Iraq into a tolerant society, we would need to occupy Iraq for a generation, build and run schools, monitor government similar to what MacArthur set up in Japan after WWII. Iraq would be more difficult since the Japanese were loyal to the emperor who gave in while Iraq has been warring against its neighbors and its own people and has no unifying leader.

US politicians believe the American people would not have the fortitude to stay for decades to nation build Iraq. We sent billions of dollars on pallets to buy influence among the war lords/tribal leaders but these leaders have seen American support wane before and American support given to their enemies. Is it the US fault that the Iraqi government is allowing the killing of its youth? My thoughts are no, it is the elected government of Iraq. They are responsible. If your thoughts are that the US is at fault, then you should be advocating that the US send enough troops for an occupation force to run Iraq for a considerable longer time at great expense and commitment of American lives.

You are very well informed. I had not known about the Bible burning in Iraq, but I know that the U.S. military did that in Afghanistan in May of 2009.
I am a very conservative person, who has never voted for a Democrat. Yet, I believe Bush was a terrible President. Bush was in charge of our national security when I went to bed on Monday, 10 September 2001. Instead of taking the blame, he used the attacks to turn the United States into a police state under perpetual surveillance. He told us he "knew" that Iraq had WMD, but never told us that this "knowledge" came from a single, uncorroborated witness ("Curveball"). Bush told us the problem was that our security services, "... weren't allowed to talk to each other." (Yes, wouldn't it have been great if Aldrich Ames had been able to see everything the FBI knew, and Richard Hanssen had been able to see everything the CIA knew?) As a result of his "reforms", a 22-y.o. Bradley Manning, without any "need to know", was able to download masses of top secret data without so much as setting off an alarm (like the alarm that goes off in your credit card company's computer if you charge something "unusual"). And of course, Bush bankrupted the U.S., as surely as he bankrupted the oil company his daddy gave him ("Arbusto").
And Obama has made it far worse, borrowing over a TRILLION dollars PER YEAR. Very, very soon, our money will become nearly worthless. Buying gold won't help. You can't eat gold, it won't fuel your car, and it won't protect you from the coming civil disorder.
Back to Iraq, I grieve for those poor boys and girls who will be killed by lsIamic extremists ... but there's nothing we can do.

So let me get this straight; According to Islam, God loves it when you kill confused teenagers by stoning them to death, God loves it when you cut off the nose of a woman who disobeys her husband, God loves it when you blow yourself up and take out a bus load of innocent people with you, God loves it when you kill your sister for marrying someone you don't approve of or she has sex out of marriage, God loves it when you beat your wife for some infraction of your rules, God loves it when you kill people for burning a book, God loves it when you cut off the hand of a hungry boy who steals a loaf of bread. God loves it when you cut off a woman's clitoris (which he gave her) because it makes her feel good when it's touched. God loves it when you stone a woman to death because she was raped. God loves it when you burn down a church filled with Christain women and children, I think I am getting it now.......... Just one question.......Do you think Satan is offened by those acts or do you think he approves also???? Just asking.....

Where the hell did you get this information from about Islam?, maybe if you were smart enough to open a book or research what Islam really is you'll realize it is against everything you mentioned, you sheep watch media and believe everything they say and put a face on a religion or person, knowledge is power. stop making accusations like a little 4 year old and do your research

You say the person above you needs to do research. I think that person knows exactly what he is talking about. Everything he said can be well documented.

Every thing he has said can be documented by being done by 'Christians' at some point to. But I would never call them Christian. And here I would never call those actions Islamic either. They are actions of extremists, just like the female circumcision is not accepted by the almost all every day Christians, and is therefore the act of extremists. The Quar'an teaches against such acts too, and is indeed a peaceful religion. The vast majority of every day Muslims don't agree with extremists and conformity in countries that are ruled by such policies is only kept through an oppressive rule. For me I hope that the voice of the every day Muslim will be heard through the Arab Spring.

No Satan could careless.. How ever the thought of Christians burning makes Odin very happy. You may recall that you bastards turned Europe Christian by the edge of a sword and burnt down all of the heathen worship temples. You forced farmers and sailors to change religon for fear of death or that you would kill their children and wives. The Christians are no better and far worse than any one else on earth.

Do you suppose you could come up with a more recent account of christian atrocities? I mean the middle ages are reaching just a little.

'Christian' modern extremism. The Norway shooting. His excuse? He believed he was doing to divine work.

Sorry, Thor, your revisionist history isn't going to cut it. Christians didn't destroy pagan temples until the great majority of the populations had already converted to serving the true God. Forced conversions were more of a political exercise than a religious one and didn't happen until the Franjish Popes came to power.

No that was the inquisition and Catholism, not Christianity. I see you have the two confused.

That was a land grab, had nothng to do with Christianity

Sorry Thors Hammer. It wasn't the "christians" who did this, it was the Catholic Papacy in Rome that instigated these atrocities.

And since when is the Catholic Papacy not christian? Lmao you apologetic bigots are pathetic

You need to learn your history... It wasn't the Catholic Papacy in Rome whom killed and enslaved the Christians of Europe. It was the Pagan Emperors of Rome such as Julius, Caligula, Nero, etc etc etc, that slaughtered the Christians of Europe. BTW, how are those honor killings going on? I mean, we all know how you followers of the moon god like to murder their own sisters and daughters because they don't submit to your misogynistic ways. That or if you don't feel like killing her, maybe a nice splash of acid to the face will do.
